Students experience several different types of whole-class reading activities in the Being a Reader program: read-alouds, strategy lessons, guided strategy practice, independent strategy practice, Individualized Daily Reading (IDR), and Language Development lessons (K-1). During read-aloud, strategy, and guided and independent strategy practice lessons, the students are taught reading comprehension strategies that research shows proficient readers use to make sense of text. They learn and practice the strategies with guidance and support before using them in their independent reading.
For more information about the lesson types, see “Teaching the Reading Lessons” in the Teaching the Program section of the Implementation Handbook.
- A print copy of the Handbook is included with your Being a Reader materials. It is packaged with the unit teacher manuals.
