Comprehension checks are available for selected texts in Being a Reader, Second Edition, grades 2–5. These checks can be used to determine comprehension grades and can also be integrated into the cumulative reading score in each unit’s Student Progress Assessment. The checks are designed to be be assigned at any point following that text’s instruction and completed independently by students. The checks address:
- For Fiction and Narrative Nonfiction texts:
- Character
- Setting
- Theme
- Inference
- Sequence
- For Expository and Persuasive Nonfiction texts:
- Topic of text
- Main idea (of a section of text)
- Information learned (important ideas)
- Text structure
- Vocabulary
