In SIPPS Beginning, Extension and Plus, you can adjust the pace of instruction based on the immediate needs of your students. Lessons in these levels contain A and B word lists. Some groups of students will master the content with one session per lesson, using the A list. Others might require reteaching using the B list. Reteaching might occur the next day, based on your observations of the students’ application of skills while reading stories or as directed in the Mastery Test considerations.
In SIPPS Challenge level, three word lists are offered so that teachers can provide the appropriate vocabulary level for each group of students. Each list (A, B, and C) coordinates phonics spellings, irregular sight syllables, and division patterns so they are taught before they appear in the “Morphemic Transformations,” “Reading by Syllables,” “Reading Entire Words,” and “Guided Spelling” routines. Within each list, the proportion of three-, four-, and five-syllable words systematically increases throughout the curriculum.
Choose the list level for your group as follows:
- For second-graders, use the A lists.
- For third-graders, use the B lists.
- For students in grades 4 and above, use the C lists.
- For English learners, you may wish to use a lower-level list than the one designed for their grade level, depending on how extensive their English vocabulary knowledge is.
