Pinecone Path has specific recommendations for daily time allocation and pacing designed to maximize student engagement and accommodate the attention span of four- and five-year-olds.
Overall Program Duration and Recommended Daily Time
Pinecone Path is a yearlong program spanning 30 weeks of instruction. This time is divided into ten topic-based units, with each unit lasting three weeks. The recommended total instructional time per day is 150 minutes. This time is segmented as follows:
- Whole-Class Instruction: 45 minutes. This includes Morning Meeting, Reading, and Vocabulary lessons.
- Small-Group Instruction, Play Centers, and Reteaching: 105 minutes. This time is dedicated to focused instruction, playful learning, and individualized support.
Lesson Pacing and Length
The program is structured around short, focused instructional blocks:
- Lesson Length: Whole-class lessons (Morning Meeting, Reading, and Vocabulary) and small-group lessons are intentionally short, designed to be approximately 12 minutes each. This brief duration is intended to accommodate the attention span of young students.
- Pacing Flexibility: Educators should note that during the first few weeks of the school year, while routines and procedures are being established, lessons may take longer than the allotted time.
- Breaks: Daily lessons should be scheduled across the day so that students are not sitting for long periods of time. Educators are advised to give students breaks (such as recess, snack, or play centers) between each day’s whole-class lessons (Morning Meeting, Reading, and Vocabulary) to help students maintain focus and enthusiasm.
- Order of Instruction: Whole-class lessons for the day should be taught in the order they appear in the Teacher’s Manual or the Week at a Glance table.
Sample Daily Schedule Breakdown
Although lessons are designed for 12 minutes, they are typically scheduled in 15-minute slots to allow for necessary transition time.
The sample daily schedule shows how instruction and complementary activities can be structured.

Scheduling Specific Components
- Play Centers: Play centers are considered integral to the program and should be experienced by students twice daily. They begin immediately in Unit 1, Week 1.
- Small-Group Instruction: This instruction, which targets skills like Letter Names and Letter Sounds, Writing, and optional Oral Language Development, begins in Unit 3, Week 1. Small-group instruction and play centers occur simultaneously.
- Reteaching: Additional time for reteaching individual students or small groups, determined through assessment, should be scheduled while other students are engaged in play centers. Resources like the Weekly Planner are available to help schedule this time.
