In kindergarten and grade 1, students engage in whole-class handwriting instruction and then practice individually in their Handwriting Notebooks. Early lessons focus on hand and finger strengthening exercises, pencil grip, and posture. Then students learn and practice stroke sequences for forming each letter, which reinforces letter recognition and improves writing fluency.
Learn more about grade-specific handwriting instruction by reading “Teaching the Handwriting Lessons” in the Teaching the Program section of the Implementation Handbook.
