At the secondary level, scheduling is definitely challenging. However, there are several possible solutions, depending on the resources available. Consider the options below.
- Set up rotating stations. SIPPS Plus lessons take approximately 30 minutes and require small, homogeneous groups, so you could work with 2–3 groups during one class period, depending on your allotted time.
- Leverage paraeducators, EL co-teachers or coaches, or other additional staff to help deliver SIPPS through small groups during rotating stations.
- Consider larger groups (up to 12 students) if the majority of your students place into SIPPS Challenge. SIPPS Challenge lessons generally take 20 minutes, and while small groups are ideal to enable accurate assessment of choral responses, many secondary teachers experience success using Challenge in groups of up to 12 students.
- Incorporate the optional Single-Syllable Phonics strand as needed to provide additional support.
- Deliver SIPPS through a small-group pull-out model, leveraging reading specialists, EL coordinators, or other additional staff.
SIPPS helps rebuild the bridge to literacy for older students, and it is easiest to build their trust and confidence in that process when they have consistent, successful experiences in text. Making SIPPS instruction a priority in the master schedule and in staffing decisions ensures adequate time for the instruction and reading practice that will lead to success.
