At the secondary level, delivery models vary based on the needs, resources, and schedule of each school. SIPPS Plus lessons generally take 30 minutes and require small, homogeneous groups of students. SIPPS Challenge lessons generally take 20 minutes, and can be taught in larger, differentiated groups. The optional Challenge Vocabulary supplement lessons take an additional 15-20 minutes. The ideal option is to make SIPPS part of a daily ELA or ELD class so students engage with the lessons as often as possible. Another option is to leverage reading specialists, EL coordinators, or other additional staff to deliver SIPPS through a small group push-in or pull-out model.
SIPPS helps rebuild the bridge to literacy for older students, and it is easiest to build their trust and confidence in that process when they have consistent, successful experiences in text. Making SIPPS instruction a priority in the master schedule ensures adequate time for the instruction and reading practice that will lead to success.
