Letter names instruction in the Being a Reader program is addressed in the kindergarten curriculum in a series of twenty lessons beginning in Week 3 of the school year.
The 15- to 20-minute whole-group lessons guide you in introducing capital and lowercase letter names. Two read-aloud books provided with the lessons are used to stimulate interest and engage the students in active learning. Activities to extend the learning are included. Suggestions for independent practice activities are provided for every lesson.
The letter names lessons can also be used to provide differentiated, small-group instruction for kindergarten students who need more support with learning letter names. Support for grade 1 students who require letter name instruction is available through the Learning Portal.
