During the first 4–6 weeks of school in grades K–2, detailed whole-class lessons instill foundational
independent work habits, which include working respectfully, handling materials responsibly, using
time wisely, and choosing activities thoughtfully. Students learn why independent reading and writing
are important to their growth and they prepare for independent work rotations.
By the end of the foundation lessons, students should be able to work for 20 minutes in each of
three work areas and be ready to rotate to the independent work areas set up around the room.
Ample practice opportunities with teacher guidance and support help students develop the
motivation and stamina to work independently, ultimately creating space for the teacher to meet
with small, differentiated groups of students without interruption.
