There are four vocabulary lessons per week, one of which is an Ongoing Review activity. The Ongoing Review activity cumulatively reviews words taught in previous weeks. This activity can be taught in its entirety in one lesson or stretched across several days.
We suggest you wait to teach the day 1 Vocabulary lesson until after you teach the read-aloud text from the Reading lessons to ensure that the students have thoroughly discussed the text before you use it during Vocabulary lessons. Vocabulary instruction becomes more meaningful for students when the words they are learning are tied to a familiar and relevant context.
See “Additional Ways to Review the Words” in the Preparing to Teach the Lessons section of the Implementation Handbook to learn more about how to support your students’ word retention.
- A print copy of the Handbook is included with your Being a Reader materials. It is packaged with the unit teacher manuals.
- A digital copy of the Handbook can be found on the Learning Portal.
