A positive climate and culture within a school is something that is important to positive student outcomes. In the Principal’s Leadership Guide, Principal Role 2 is entitled: Set a Positive School Tone and Build the Adult Community. Leadership activities designed to support this include facilitating staff team building, facilitating staff norm setting, and cultivating a professional learning community centered on student growth, learning, and well-being. These activities are detailed in Meeting 1 on pages 28-37 of the Principal’s Leadership Guide.
Other meeting agendas and activities contained with the Principal’s Leadership Guide also support the development of Adult SEL. The creation of a statement of school culture promotes conversation around staff beliefs about how students learn and how schools support and exemplify those beliefs. This activity is part of Meeting 1 and continues through Meetings 2 and 3 as detailed in the Principal’s Leadership Guide.
Holding frequent check-in, problem-solving, and planning/decision-making meetings not only models Caring School Community class meetings, it offers the adults in the community an opportunity to share their voice and build and maintain relationships among colleagues. Agendas for these meetings are available in the Principal’s Leadership Guide.
Leaders who model a warm and respectful tone with students and staff, and who treat family members as valued contributors, while expecting others to do the same, support a climate and culture that is positive and builds the adult community.
