Think, Pair, Share is a collaborative learning strategy in which children engage in a structured conversation with a partner. It involves three key steps:
- Think: Children individually consider and formulate an answer to a posed question.
- Pair: Children turn to face their partners, sitting knee-to-knee, and look at each other to show they are listening.
- Share: Children take turns sharing their answers and ideas with their partner.
Think, Pair, Share is a key component of Days 2 and 3 of a repeated read-aloud lesson that supports children in reflecting on the story and making personal connections. It allows children to process the story they've heard and relate it to their own lives, experiences, and emotions, which is crucial for comprehension.
For Think, Pair, Share to be successful, it is essential to explicitly teach children how to participate in the routine before integrating it into a lesson.
See the “Teaching a Procedure for Think, Pair, Share” resource on the Learning Portal to learn how to teach this important structure.
