Why are there no texts for student reading provided after Lesson 23 in Extension Level? After Lesson 23, should all students read from the same book? How do I know what books are a good match?
The goal of SIPPS instruction is to efficiently and effectively develop students’ automaticity and move them into reading trade books. We do not want the students to be reading controlled-vocabulary texts any longer than absolutely necessary. Students who are able to read the final stories in the Extension Level Story Book will be successful with easy-to-read trade books. By listening to a student read quietly aloud, the teacher can make a judgment about the match between student and text. At this stage of reading development, each student can be reading a different book depending on interest and availability.
